Asthma - Herbs with a relaxant effect such as lobelia can be used in the early stages of an asthma attack to prevent it developing, while others may be used over a longer time-scale to address the root of the problem - often autoimmune.
Chronic & Post Viral Fatigue Syndromes - The various debilitating conditions that may be grouped under these headings can respond well to a sustained course of herbal treatment, including adaptogens to increase vitality, immmune stimulants to enhance resistance, and nervine herbs to aid relaxation and to strengthen to nervous system.
Coughs & Colds - A variety of herbal remedies work well for clearing a cold faster by boosting the immune response. As these are best provided as a tea they are inexpensive and I'm happy to waive the consultation fee for the five or ten minutes it takes to discuss getting a cold remedy. These medicines are good to keep on hand, as the sooner they are taken the more effective they can be.
Depression & Despondency - The much publicised and well-researched St. John's Wort is an excellent remedy in certain types of depression, however there are some it does not suit. Fortunately there are a great range of other herbal remedies to choose from so an accurate mixture may be prepared to help with almost any kind or degree of depression
Eczema - In addition to a variety of soothing lotions and other preparations to suit each kind of eczema eruption on the skin, considerable benefit can be gained by using internal medicines to address the underlying conditions and thereby reduce the need for topical remedies.
Feelings of Ill Health and Low Vitality - With the great range of herbal medicines available, and the variety of actions and uses of each herb, a unique formula can put together to suit each patient leading to an improvement in general health and energy levels.
Hayfever - Herbal medicines can be effective in reducing the symptoms of hayfever, even after the season has started. However, by starting a course of treatment well in advance of the season, much deeper improvements can be achieved.
Headaches & Migraines - These may be the result of of several underlying conditions - stress, high blood pressure, and even a mild sluggishness of the live - to name a few. Having gained during the consultation an idea of what may be the cause, I can prescribe a mix of herbs to address this problem as well as a medicine to be taken at the onset of a headache or migraine, to reduce its severity.
Hypertension - Herbs may reduce high blood pressure by addressing specifically whatever may be the root cause, be it stress, fluid retention, or capillary tension.
IBS - While chiefly affecting the gut, IBS is often the result of many root causes, including stress, poor diet, and food intolerance. Having studied the many aspects of this now common complaint quite thoroughly on my degree, I can treat it from many angles with herbs, and with lifestyle and dietary advice, which may afford considerable relief.
Insomnia - There may be many causes of sleeplessness, so in addition to an assortment of herbal sedatives at my disposal, I can select herbs to address these causes with the purpose of reducing the need to use stronger sedatives to ensure a good night's sleep.
Low Immunity - A number of herbal formulas boost vitality and strengthen the immune response. Whilst a number of herbs are shown in vitro to directly influence the immune system, I can make a formula using other herbs suited to each individual patient based on what I learn in the consultation that can improve health and immunity in a more holistic manner.
Menopausal symptoms - The menopause has been increasingly medicalised in recent years, and it is important to remember that it is a natural part of aging, a transition to a new stage of life. This said, the severity of associated symptoms varies greatly, and for some can be acutely distressing. Many herbs can help make this transition as gentle as possible, reducing the symptoms with none of the side-effects associated with hormone replacement treatment, which in effect simply delays the process.
Piles - Effectively piles begin as a varicose vein which protrudes and become become irritated and even damaged. Herbal treatment can address this in many ways; by supporting the tone of affected vein, by soothing and healing the irritated tissues, and by reducing constipation and the need to strain when emptying the bowel, which can severely irritate a damaged vein.
PMS - Most women are affected by some pre-menstrual symptoms, and perhaps period pain while menstruating. Herbal medicines may provide relief of many of these, with antispasmodics to reduce cramping, nervines to reduce stress, and a few herbs to reduce bloating.
Prostatic Enlargement - A common problem affecting men in later life, it may be just an annoyance. or it can become more serious. Two herbs have been well researched in the treatment of this condition, and have found to produce good results in many cases.
Osteoarthritis - This is in part a natural effect of aging, with wear and tear on the joints occurring faster than the cartilage can be restored Some herbs and dietary supplements nay assist with the natural renewal process, while other preparations can help with symptoms of stiffness and pain, such as heating liniments to warm the area and help the circulation.
Rheumatoid arthritis - This is no doubt a complex and tricky condition to treat, however some herbal medicines may provide a degree of relief from the symptoms, including liniments, and embrocations, while others may try to go a step further, and address the underlaying condition to reduce its progress, if not to stop it.
Ulcers - From mouth ulcers to leg ulcers, herbal medicines include some of the finest ulcer healing preparations in the world, perhaps most importantly myrrh. This excellent resin had powerful antiseptic properties, and is also astringent, helping to dry and seal suppurating tissues, and strongly supportive of the local immune response. It also promotes rapid re-growth of the tissues helping to heal the wound and reduce scarring.
Varicose veins - Many herbs can be found to assist different aspects of the circulation and the blood system. Some in particular are very useful in restoring tone to the weak venous circulation that leads to varicose veins.
